a moment to remember

Some people try hard to hold on to their memories, while some others would rather they can forget. The female lead in AMTR dreads the day when her memories will be erased completely, yet some of us wish there were things we can do to start anew, to be rid of those painful moments that keep haunting us. The classic Streisand ballad goes “What’s too painful to remember, we simply choose to forget…” But can we do that? Can we CHOOSE to forget? Quite the contrary, I’m afraid the more we try to forget, the more firmly it clings onto our minds.

So we remember them all, the good, the bad, the ugly. And then the brain works its mischief until some chemical reactions take place, and they can all sit together comfortably in those little corners of our memory box. I hope we never choose to forget; I hope we would never say to the ones we love: “I wish I could forget what happened between us”. Because one day, we may not have a choice. One day our memories might erase themselves until we lose our souls. Let’s cherish what we remember then, all of them. Because “we grow through our suffering, and not by erasing the things that give us discomfort.”
